Now Edmunds.com has released its second update on the early car that it bought, and the news isn’t good.

With 5,257 miles on the odometer, they continue to have recurring problems with the car’s electronics, focused on the center touchscreen.

-Through April, Edmunds’ car continued to randomly crank the stereo volume up to "deafening," and occasionally even turn the stereo on by itself at full volume.

-The rearview camera image sometimes failed to appear. The navigation screen would zoom in and out and scroll all by itself, frequently pixelating the image.

-Icons on the map screen would flicker. The audio display would rapidly jump up and down the screen by itself.

-Or, the whole center screen, which houses most of the car’s primary controls, would refuse to turn on.

Once, the car wouldn’t recognize the key card from inside, and thus wouldn’t engage Drive or Reverse (even after it had recognized the card from the outside and let the driver into the car.)

All of these problems required rebooting the car. For the most part, that fixed the problems temporarily, but sometimes not all the features, such as the rearview camera, came back.

Twice, the passenger’s side vanity mirror fell out of the visor, and Edmunds editors pressed it back onto the double-sided tape designed to hold it in place.

After documenting the problems, Edmunds took their car into the Tesla service center, where Tesla technicians replaced the center screen and upgraded the car’s software. This seemed to fix most of the problems with the center screen, such as the radio suddenly turning on and the maps going haywire, but other problems soon appeared.

An error message would appear on the center screen telling the driver to wait before shifting into Drive or Reverse. After several seconds and a loud clunk from the rear of the car, the message would clear and the driver could shift into gear.

Another error message came on suddenly while driving, saying "Cannot maintain vehicle power. Car may stop driving or shut down." This was an isolated error message, and the car didn’t shut down or stop driving, but the error message was worrisome nonetheless.

A third message said "Regenerative braking limited." The car was showing 170 miles of range at the time, so the battery should have had plenty of room to store regenerative energy. It wasn’t clear what might have caused the problem.

Edmunds also had some problems with the car’s Autopilot system, though they were fixed with an over-the-air update.

So far, the car hasn’t required any days out of service, so it hasn’t left any Edmunds staff members stranded. (The visit to the service center took just three hours.) Still Edmunds reports that its staff members are growing weary of all the problems in a $56,000 car that’s only four months old and has just over 5,000 miles on the odometer.

The organization has scheduled another service visit this month, and plans to keep readers abreast of any more problems that occur.

The latest in our series of half price hot hatches is a car that deserves more attention than it’s ever given: the Vauxhall Astra GTC VXR. Underrated when new, it continues to fly beneath the radar even now you can pick one up for less than 50 per cent of its original £27,720 list price.

This is the second generation VXR, which went on sale in 2012 and is based on the Astra ‘J’. Where its predecessor had been crude but effective, the aim with its replacement was to create a more rounded car, capable of taking on a Volkswagen Golf GTI not only when it came to power and speed, but in design and comfort terms too.

Rather than basing it on the five-door Astra, Vauxhall (read Opel for markets other than the UK) instead turned to the three-door GTC for the foundations of its latest VXR. This immediately gave it a healthy amount of visual appeal, boosted by a restrained (by VXR standards) but effective bodykit and 19-inch alloy wheels. Compared with some hot hatches it could almost be described as exotic.

The mechanical specification is just as enticing. Under the bonnet is a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine kicking out 276bhp and 295lb ft of torque, which in turn makes this a Vauxhall Astra than can get from 0-60mph in just 5.9 seconds. Channeling that much power through the front wheels isn’t terribly simple, which is why Vauxhall equipped the VXR with both a mechanical limited-slip differential and its HiPerStrut front suspension, which reduces torque steer (that’s the wheel pulling from side to side when you accelerate hard).

THE DRIVE
Sure enough, the Astra VXR is an accomplished car when it comes to long motorway drives, riding well despite its enormous wheels and lowered ride height. In fact, aside from a heavy clutch and lacklustre visibility, it gives the Golf GTI a good run for its money when it comes to the day-to-day stuff, and is roomy enough to fit for four with ease.

The engine can suffer from a little turbo lag if you floor the accelerator without enough revs on the dial, but once on song the performance is serious. It’s backed up by a great soundtrack, a hard-edged four-cylinder growl overlaid with the whoosh and whistle of the turbocharger. The manual gearbox isn’t the slickest around, but the brakes are seriously powerful, and although the steering lacks feel the way the VXR locks on to your chosen line and then sucks you through the corner is borderline addictive.

Not even the fancy front suspension can contain the torque steer completely, but for anybody who likes to feel involved in the driving experience that’s not necessarily a terrible thing.

CHECK POINTS
First of all you need to decide whether to buy a standard VXR or one with the optional Aerodynamic Pack. This replaces the standard 19-inch wheels with the lighter 20-inch rims and adds a bi-plane rear spoiler and larger side skirts. In either case road tax is £270 per year and you can expect to see around 25mpg if driven sensibly, or closer to 20mpg if you start to really use the performance.

Inspect the paintwork thoroughly, as early cars were susceptible to stone chips, so much so that Vauxhall fixed many of them under warranty. Inside the car the lever for the seat folding mechanism can break, and it’s always worth checking the electrical items work too. Also bear in mind the long doors make it tricky to get out in tight parking spaces.

On a test drive the main consideration is the gearbox. Listen for any whining and crunching sounds between first and second gears in particular, or for the car jumping out of gear, and consider taking out a warranty if the car doesn’t already come with one. It’s also worth changing the gearbox oil when the car is serviced every year.

Replacement brakes and tyres are expensive so you’ll be wanting to find a car with plenty of wear left in both, and as with any hot hatch look for signs that it’s been looked after, which means checking the general condition, plus looking for a car with a full service history and high quality tyres. If in doubt it’s worth paying for a specialist to inspect the car for you.

BMW M8 GTE Finishes Fifth at Long Beach

A fifth place finish by the No. 24 BMW M8 GTE of John Edwards and Jesse Krohn in today’s IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship BUBBA burger Sports Car Grand Prix at Long Beach made a difficult day much better for BMW Team RLL. What started as an excellent race for the No. 25 BMW M8 GTE of Alexander Sims and Connor DePhillippi, after clever pit strategy and the luck of a caution period, ultimately saw the car retire from the race on lap 37 after leading for nine laps.

DePhillippi started the No. 25 M8 GTE from the seventh GTLM class position and was the first car in class to pit on lap 17 at the 29 minute mark as the fuel window opened. Sims took over the controls and reentered the race with new Michelin tires and enough fuel to make the end of the race. A broken prototype brought out the race’s second yellow flag minutes later allowing Sims to save fuel and cycle to the front of the class as the balance of the field made their stops. Krohn, who had started the race in the eighth position, held position in the No. 24 M8 GTE.

After leading nine laps,  Sims was hip-checked back to second place at the fountain complex by the No. 912 Porsche.  Edwards, now behind the wheel of the No. 24 M8 GTE from lap 23, raced in the seventh position. The complexion of the race for BMW changed on lap 36 when Sims tagged the wall exiting the turn 10 hairpin and was forced to the pits. Ultimately, the car was retired. Lap 40 saw Edwards take over the sixth position. 11 more laps saw the No. 24 M8 move up to fifth as the No. 912 Porsche pitted with damage. Edwards held the position for the remaining 20 minutes of the contest to score a fifth place finish.

“A fifth place almost feels like a win,” said Bobby Rahal, Team Principal.Our strategy worked out well initially, pitting early and getting one of the cars into the lead after the yellow. It was obvious that it would be very difficult for us to stay in the lead however. I am disappointed for the team as everyone has worked very hard and to not have the pace is very tough. Long Beach is a handling track but we still needed some more grunt. We will keep working hard and hope we will get back to the pace we had at Sebring.”

Connor De Phillippi, driver No. 25 BMW M8 GTE (DNF): “The team made a perfect strategy call to come in early. We played it relatively smart in the beginning to get out with the lead under yellow. We ran as hard as we could, as we have the whole weekend, but it simply wasn’t quite enough. Alex was fighting hard out there for us. Some days aren’t your days and today wasn’t ours. We will analyze and move on to the next event and try to get back into the fight for the podium.”

Alexander Sims, driver No. 25 BMW M8 GTE (DNF): “In the beginning, the team made a great call on strategy putting us ahead of everyone else. If the car and I had had more pace we would have been able to make it stick and would have gotten a great result from it.”

John Edwards, driver No. 24 BMW M8 GTE (P5): “We executed a good race even though we knew we did not have the pace from qualifying. We planned to have one car do a non-traditional strategy and it worked when Alex got the lead under yellow. Unfortunately it did not go as planned when the No. 25 car was pushed wide and hit the wall. We were able to run a clean race in the No. 24 car and I think we executed well but did not have the pace throughout the weekend and had to find ways to make up spots.”

Jesse Krohn, driver No. 24 BMW M8 GTE (P5): “We got the best out of the car we could today but we simply did not have the pace. We got to the front with the No. 25 through great use of tactics but you saw the other cars driving around us. I am very happy for what we were able to do today with what we had.”
